Humans
✔ Humans are mortal creatures which make up most of the world's population. Humans are physically far more vulnerable than the supernatural creatures which they live unknowingly amongst; but there is a striking advantage for the humans : There is power in numbers.
✔ Most humans have typical senses and healing levels. Human life spans usually average to about 100 years; though the likes of disease, accidents and other such maladies are quite common in knocking years off the average lifespan.
✔ Witches and Sorcerers do exist; they are just extremely rare and are always a product of genetics. True magic can not be learned by just any human. True spell-casters can be talented with many forms of magic at one time, though it is safe to say that all spells, incantations and other such items found within the Craft take time and great patience to learn. Those who let their magic run wild will be taken in to account by it, one way or another. Nature has a way of correcting the imbalances to those who abuse their gifts. 'Dark' magics tend to take a toll on the caster's soul; they also often need the power of another life to fuel them. Some spell-casters have found the ability to extend their own lives, but in the end - they always do die.
✔ Humans can not become Dragons, Shifters or truly of The Fae. They can become Vampires. Humans may breed with Dragons, The Fae, and Shifters. Survival rates of human mothers to dragon hybrids are known to be very low.
The Fae
✔ There are a vast amount of creatures which identify as being among the Fae. The most notable, however, are the Sidhe, the Demi-fey (Pixies/Fairies), Goblins, Undines, Brownies, Cù-Sìth, and the Sluagh. [Note - see the
Creature FAQ for more details
]
✔ All peoples of the Fae find themselves aligned to one of two Courts; Seelie or Unseelie. While many types can be found in both, there are certain peoples of the Fae which can be found in one and yet not in the other. For example: Goblins and the Sluagh are all Unseelie. Brownies and Undines are all Seelie.
✔ Both of the Courts have their own magic types. Those who are Unseelie typically deal in darker, less pleasant seeming or destructive magics while the Seelie tend towards magics which are more pleasant or seemingly helpful and gentle. Though these aspects are in place, all members of both Courts are open to having both positive and negative personality traits. The Seelie also tend towards keeping up appearances over showing the truth of the darker parts of their natures.
✔ While lying is something that those of the Fae are capable of, they are also subject to the Curse of the Sluagh through such an action. Therefore, most of the Fae do not lie if they are given a choice. However, they are all masters at bending the truth, and are very witty when it comes to the art of political intrigue.
✔ All Fae are capable of 'common magic'. Things like the healing of injuries, mild glamour, and calling items which belong to them to themselves are things which classify under 'common magic'.
✔ Some Fae are technically immortal. However, those that are can fade from sorrow/lack of will to live. All Fae are also made more vulnerable by long separations from Nature. Electronics and other such human technologies, while not exactly a true vulnerability, will slowly sap their energy if they are around them for too long. Those that linger in the mortal realm for long periods of time will find themselves a bit worse for wear, though still powerful.
Dwarves
✔ While Dwarves are technically of the Fae, they are often times categorized as their own species due to the fact they do not adhere to the classifications of Seelie or Unseelie. They are also less geared towards magical aspects and more so to the sciences and logic.
✔ Though not devoid of magical practices as a whole, they are not ones who wield it as other creatures of the Fae would. They have a stronger resistance against it, they also have a stronger resistance against poisons and diseases. Despite these things, Dwarves are mortal creatures who can live up to 500 years. Through this, they have a higher fertility rate than most other citizens of Faerie.
✔ Dwarves are the Architects, Inventors and Blacksmiths of the Faerie Realm. Their buildings and craftsmanship is known to outlast all other forms of such from any other creature type. The other peoples of Faerie are typically in contest to hire them for projects, though any type of side-dealings with the Dwarven enemy (Goblins) can destroy an agreement quickly.
✔ Tending towards being short, stocky and very strong, the Dwarven race rarely presents members over 5' in height. Males are often seen with very healthy beards, as it is a traditional sign of honor, wealth and prowess in battle. Females do not grow beards.
✔ Though Dwarves have mortality and are not often dependent upon magic, they do make excellent warriors. They do have a great deal of strength, though they do not have the healing capabilities most other Fae do. Instead, they rely upon wit, science and logic - and brethren who are more interested in the medical understandings of their species than other areas.
✔ Dwarves do not often leave the Kingdom Inside the Mountain. Instead, they have small outreaches beneath the foothills with underground roadways leading to and from each outreach. While they have built mechanisms, powered by steam, to help them get around within the Kingdom - none of their steam-based inventions will work outside of their direct domain.
Dragons
✔ All Dragons have a treasure to guard, and that treasure is usually in the form of some natural resource found in the human world. Many Dragons are guardians of rivers, lakes, or whole oceans. Others are the guardians of certain forested areas and in some cases, cities will find themselves protected by one of these guardians of old. It all depends on what catches the Dragon's eye the most. However, once they pick, they will most likely never change their mind about it.
✔ Originally creatures which were considered of the Fae, Dragons did not exit the mortal realm with the rest of their magical kindred. Instead, they remained in the human world and began to masquerade among those who would rather see them dead - all due to staying with the 'treasure' of their affection. From this, they have evolved well at keeping themselves in the proverbial closet of life. Despite this, Dragons are very rare due to the fact their kind are beginning to go extinct.
✔ All Dragons are capable of transforming in to a human. As the Dragon grows older, so does their human form. Typical Dragon lifespans can last upwards to 1,000 years. So, the human form's aging is very slow. For comparison's sake, a Dragon which is around 1,000 would appear to be in their 90's in their human form. A Dragon that is 200 would most likely appear to be in their human form's mid to late teens. Many Dragons will hide themselves away for spans of time so not to raise questions about their aging process.
✔ Great strength, immense size and very high healing capabilities are gifts of all Dragons. Speed, stealth and agility are also high in all breeds, as it the power of flight - as long as they have the wings to do it with. All Dragons may breathe either fire or ice, but no Dragon may breathe both. In their true form, a Dragon's scales are also very strongly resistant towards the elements found in nature.
✔ Dragons can be killed by beheading, as well as by massive heart trauma or injuries too severe to heal quickly all at once. They are far more vulnerable while they are in their human form, though they are immune to human diseases and can heal most injuries which would kill a human.
Vampires
✔ Vampires are nocturnal creatures. They burn in direct sunlight, no matter their age or power level. Day-walkers are non-existent.
✔ Vampires must drink blood to survive. Animal blood does not sustain a Vampire as well as human blood does. Fae blood is a delicacy among Vampires, while Shifter blood is on par with that of the animals they turn in to. Dragon blood has proven to be too corrosive to ingest.
✔ All Vampires have advanced strength, speed, agility, senses and healing capabilities.
✔ Vampires become more powerful with age; gaining one or two extra 'gifts' along the way after their first century. These gifts are limited to such things as telekinesis, empathy, levitation, hypnotism, and the ability to feed on sexual energy. (If there is a power that you'd like which is not listed here, please ask a mod before applying it to your character. Such things like elemental control will not be available to vampires.)
✔ Vampires are technically dead. They do not breathe, nor do they need to ingest anything aside from blood. When they've fed properly, they grow warm and have a faint heartbeat for a few limited hours. Though they may have sexual relations with others within and outside of their own species, they can not procreate as living creatures can. They may only reproduce through 'The Bond', which is the complicated process of draining a human almost to the point of death and then reprocessing that blood back to them from the vein of said drainer.
✔ Fledglings (just turned - 1 year) are especially thirsty creatures, and easily go in to fits of blood lust. Vampires will feel the thirst lessen as they grow older, though even the eldest must always feed at least once weekly in order to survive.
✔ Vampires are not repelled/harmed by religious objects, garlic or silver. They are very vulnerable to fire, dismemberment/separation of their dismembered body parts and the sun. Dragon blood has been proven to be corrosive to their systems, and will weaken them/kill them if enough is ingested.
Shifters
✔ Like Dragons, Shifters were once considered to be members of the Fae. However, they were far more attuned to the mortal world and had such a very close kinship with their human cousins that they decided to remain behind with them. Since that time, the Shifters have bred most of their Fae qualities out, leaving mainly the ability which gives them their name behind.
✔ A Shifter's true form is that of a human. Like humans, they are not totally immune to diseases or old age. However, they do have stronger systems than humans, and their life-span can reach up to 200 years.
✔ Too many traumatic injuries at once will nullify a Shifter's healing capabilities. All Shifters are born to be as they are. Humans may not become Shifters through a bite. If a human and a shifter breed together, their children have a 1 in 3 chance of becoming a Shifter as well.
✔ All Shifters are blessed with extra strength, and very slightly enhanced healing capabilities. They do not retain any qualities of the animals they shift in to while they are in human form.
✔ Each Shifter is capable of turning in to any 'real' animal (nothing considered mythological) that they know the workings of. Most will have their first 'turn' around the time when puberty first hits, and they will change in to the animal they like the most or have given the most attention to in their young lives.
✔ Shifting takes a lot of energy. Most can only change twice a day - once to animal, once back to human - without it taking a toll upon them. Sometimes, if they change too many times during a day's span, they can get extremely ill. Worst case scenarios have seen a Shifter getting 'stuck between' forms, and being unable to change back before suffocating, due to low energy levels.
Other
If you have an idea for another species, feel free to pitch it us! While we are leaving details and facts for these other creatures up to their creators, we do ask that there is some attention paid to what is already in place. We also ask that it isn't anything as simplistic as 'He bursts in to bird shaped flames and is therefore a Phoenix'. All pitched species ideas need to have checks and balances as well as cultural ideas to play with.
We will not be accepting Angels, Demons or Gods/Goddesses.
